The construction of St. Peter’s Basilica took over a century in the making.The planning of the Basilica started when Pope Julius II commissioned a competition to design the grandest building in Christendom. The winner of the competition was Donato Bramante, and the foundation stone was laid in 1506. A series of deaths and personnel changes led to the change of architects from Bramante to Raphael to eventually Michelangelo in 1547.

Information and reception

1. Dedicated Entrance

  • Go to the newsstand on the side of the right-hand colonnade of St Peter's Square.
  • Show your QR code purchase confirmation to the Basilica staff.
  • Visitors with audio guides will be directed to their dedicated entrance.


2. Audio Guide Pickup

  • The audio guide pickup desk is located on the right side of the steps of St. Peter's Basilica after the security checks.
  • Simply show your reservation to the Basilica staff.
  • You will be required to leave an identity document (not a passport), which will be returned when you return the device.


3. St. Peter's Basilica

  • The audio guide is available in Italian, English, French, Spanish, and German.
  • This service is not available during Vatican holidays.
