The spiritual significance of the Pantheon makes it a meaningful stop on an itinerary that continues to the Crypt of Sant’Agnese in Agone, where the testimony of the young martyr invites visitors to contemplate the courage of a faith lived to the point of complete self-giving.
The Pantheon was built by Emperor Hadrian between AD 118 and 125 on the site of an earlier temple commissioned by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. Originally dedicated to the Roman gods, it was converted into a Christian church in the seventh century under the name of Santa Maria ad Martyres, helping to ensure its preservation over the centuries. At the centre of the dome is the oculus, which allows natural light to enter and evokes the connection between heaven and earth. Its transformation into a place of Christian worship makes it a powerful symbol of the encounter between classical culture and the Christian faith, offering visitors an opportunity to reflect on humanity’s journey in search of God throughout history.
